“Art Unleashed” with Fibers & Textiles at the LA County Fair

This year’s LA County Fair was themed “Art Unleashed.” Several fiber and textiles activities showcased intersections between fashion and agriculture during May 2025.

A hand-woven community-based textile was created based on the leadership of apparel student Angela Becerril. The textile was exhibited at the annual Home Arts exhibit and showcased a variety of students’ hand-spinning and weaving efforts from 2024-2025. This included the contributions of several volunteers from Introduction to Textile Science classes, and previous student researchers. The unique texture conveys students’ craftsmanship and outcomes of their experiential learning with U.S. wool.

Textile Engagement with Youth

Apparel students also volunteered to engage with youth during K-12 field trips at the Fair. They did hands-on weaving demonstrations, hand-spinning demonstrations, and shared Cal Poly Pomona washed wool samples. They also presented their creative-research experiences based on the annual AATCC concept to consumer competition focused on proposing a sustainable, water-consciousness clothing line. I was very proud to witness their high level of engagement with youth and community members!

Community Crochet Canopy

A unique highlight this year was to see continuous commitment to develop the “Community Crochet Canopy.” Local Pomona artist, Khaos Crafts hosted several crochet workshops in the Fairplex, months leading up to the Fair date. There was an open call for local artisans and newcomers to crochet one or more 12” x 12” crochet squares. This was a unique fiber art and textile contribution to embody the theme of “Art Unleashed.” Below is an image of a crochet square I developed made from naturally colored wool from Orchard View Lincoln Longwools. Recent apparel alumni Isabella Andrade also created a crochet square to contribute to the community-based effort.

The “Community Crochet Canopy” vibrantly conveyed the fiber community spirit with bright colors and textures that elevated the creativity in the space. It is an emblem of continuous efforts and commitment with specialized crochet techniques!

“Advocate for Agriculture” Exhibit

Natural fibers were further integrated into the annual 48th District Agricultural Association exhibit with the theme of “Advocate for Agriculture.” It showcased creative work to increase awareness about agriculture, and I am showing a few examples of youth’s creativity regarding cotton and wool.

Below are example of youth’s work about cotton – a natural plant fiber:

The variety of fiber and textiles provided a unique opportunity for community members to be exposed to a variety of techniques and perspectives. Seeing the range of students work was especially interesting to me. It conveys a piqued interest in a major urban area, LA County, where it isn’t as common to be exposed to discussions and visuals that highlight natural fibers, textiles, and connections with agriculture. The presence of the textiles invited action and discussions about fiber arts, sewing, and craftsmanship more broadly.
