Continuing Seams of STEAM

COVID-19 has caused many abrupt changes over the past few months and it has definitely changed my approaches to teaching about Apparel and developing educational content. One aspect that I was worried about was the Seams of STEAM summer youth empowerment program where I usually develop and lead workshops with 3 Latina youth from San Marcos and Temecula CA. It took a lot of additional effort, but I am happy to say that I was able to develop the content and lead the workshops this summer (with social distancing and COVID-19 precautions in place).

This summer the program focused on exploring strengths in language arts, fibers arts, fashion, math, science, as well as exploratory learning with Adobe Premiere editing. Emily and Yazmin focused on reading “When Life Gives you Lululemons,” wrote a letter to themselves considering what accomplishments and skills they hope to achieve in 15 years, and worked through fiber-fashion probability and discrete math problems. Below are some images from previous summers and the current summer.
